The Truth Behind Common Invisalign Myths

MYTH #1: “All clear aligners are created equal.”

Contrary to what some believe, not all clear aligners are the same. After Invisalign was founded in 1997, it received FDA clearance for its aligners in 1998. Since then, this well-known and widely-used brand has been a driving force in popularizing this type of orthodontic treatment. Invisalign has a large network of certified orthodontists and dentists who are highly trained to offer this treatment.

Moreover, it uses advanced technology, including 3D imaging and computer-generated treatment plans, to make custom-fit clear aligners that provide the most precise fit and the most accurate tooth movement compared to other clear aligner brands. Since Invisalign has been on the market for decades, its developers have spent enough time perfecting the technology.

MYTH #2: “Oral hygiene isn’t as important with Invisalign as it is with braces.”

Practicing excellent oral hygiene is crucial to maintaining healthy teeth and gums while undergoing orthodontic treatment. Although Invisalign aligners are removable, you’ll still need to keep them clean. Otherwise, they’ll collect bacteria and plaque that could lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Experts recommend brushing and flossing teeth before putting the aligners back in and visiting the dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. In addition, they strongly suggest cleaning the aligners daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a denture cleaner or unscented soap. Since Invisalign treatment requires you to clean the aligners, it adds an extra step to your oral hygiene routine.

MYTH #3: “Invisalign can only fix simple malocclusions.”

Unlike other clear aligners, Invisalign can treat simple, moderate, and complex malocclusions. Dental professionals use it to treat many orthodontic issues, including crowding, spacing, and bite problems like overbite and underbite.

However, Invisalign may not be suitable for severe malocclusions that require jaw surgery. Your orthodontist or dentist is the best person to determine whether Invisalign is the appropriate tooth-straightening option for you.

MYTH #4: “Any dental professional can treat Invisalign.”

Although any licensed dentist can offer Invisalign as a treatment option, not all dentists have the same level of experience or training. It’s best to ensure optimal results by checking if your dentist is an Invisalign-certified provider. You’ll also want to ask about their experience with Invisalign before deciding to proceed with the treatment.

MYTH #5: “Invisalign is only for teens.”

Contrary to popular belief, Invisalign isn’t exclusively for teens. Adults who want to straighten their teeth without the visible appearance of traditional metal braces often choose Invisalign. Some use this treatment to correct teeth that shifted after wearing traditional braces earlier in life.

MYTH #6: “You won’t need to wear your Invisalign aligners 22 hours a day.”

You should wear your Invisalign trays as instructed. Dentists typically advise patients to wear their aligners for up to 22 hours daily to achieve the best results. Invisalign aligners continuously apply gentle force to the teeth until they move into the desired position. Wearing them for 20-22 hours per day helps make this happen.
